Course Description

Explore the deeply complex and moving diaries left behind by two extraordinary Jewish young women: German-born Annelies (Anne) Frank (1929-1945) and Dutch-born Esther (Etty) Hillesum (1914-1943), who recorded their lives during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam—the former in hiding and the latter living and working as a housekeeper, after her college graduation. While both perished as victims of the Shoah (in 1945 and 1943), their written words survive as examples of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of introspection in the face of annihilation.
