Course Description

This is the first of a 4-part series: Virginia History. Class 1, Early Virginia, will start with a look at the earliest settlers in Virginia during the Paleoindian Period and continue through life in Virginia in the 1750s. Then we will explore Native American life before and after the arrival of the first Spanish and then English explorers who reached Virginia’s shores in the 16th century. Next, we will look at the life and cultures of the indigenous peoples of Virginia, the Jamestown settlement, and the enslaved people in Virginia. This class will include a discussion of the book, "The 1619 Project." We will devote our final session to the often-complicated interactions between the Native Americans, the French, and the British, the French and Indian War, and the growing roots of discontent that led to the Revolutionary War.
