Course Description

Explore the vibrant, intellectual, and personal relationship between two titans of the Harlem Renaissance movement, or the New Negro Movement: Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960) and Langston Hughes (1901-1967). For a brief time in the late 1920’s, they were the closest of friends—“literary soulmates”—and collaborators, traveling the South to capture the "real" Black American voice. However, their attempt to co-author the unfinished folk-play Mule Bone: A Comedy of Negro Life led to a spectacular falling-out that severed their friendship forever.
