Course Description

This is the second of a 4-part series: Virginia History, Class 2, The Founding of America through pre-Civil War Virginia will look into the early history of Virginia, from the 1750s through the 1850s. We will first focus on the lives of many Virginians who played an important role in the Revolutionary War and the founding of the United States. Virginia is the home of four of the first five American Presidents! Next, we will look at the Revolutionary War with an emphasis on the war in Virginia. The long journey to the Constitution will be considered in our third class. We will end our time together by looking at the impact of slavery during this period and how it was a critical factor that led to the Civil War. We will reflect on the lives of enslaved individuals on a Virginia plantation. To continue your learning, join fellow LLI members on a Bus Trip to Montpelier and Sperrysville, VA.
